Explore the ancient pyramids (and more!)

Google Street View allows you to easily bring the world to your students.  Google has committed to use this technology to educate others about many wonders of the modern and ancient world (including the world below the ocean) and cataloging these locations on a website called Streetview Treks. You may want to explore some of these place on your own. Simply point your browser to the Streetview Treks website to being your adventure: http://www.google.com/maps/about/behind-the-scenes/streetview/treks/ The latest addition to the site allows you to explore the ancient pyramids - it's a terrific resource for learning about ancient Egypt. Did you know Google could do that?

Culture at Your Fingertips - Part I

The Google Cultural Institute is a treasure trove of interactive media. By presenting data in an engaging "story timeline," students can explore works of art, learn about historic moments, and view ancient and modern world wonders. In this post, we are going to explore the "Historic Moments" collection. Here are some highlights: You can learn about the Battle of Normandy by viewing this collection.  Clicking on the arrow on the right side of the screen allows you to navigate through the presentation. You can also use your computer keyboard to scroll through an interactive gallery on the Normandy Invasion, presented by the National Archives and Records Administration. Another fascinating virtual exhibit allows you to explore the Eiffel Tower in 1900. This exhibit contains amazing photos and detailed images that will help you appreciate the magnitude of this amazing structure. Finally, baseball fans will love the exhibit "Picturing America's Pastime.&q

Time's Up!

Did you know that you can easily create a customized countdown timer from Google's home page? Just type "countdown timer" into the search box, and you will be presented with a working countdown timer: You can customize the timer by clicking on it, allowing you to set the duration of the countdown: You can also click on the icons on the right side of the timer window to mute/unmute the timer alarm and set the timer to full screen mode. The timer is a useful tool that can be used during "turn and talk" discussions, or even to time classroom activities and student presentations. Did you know Google could do that?

Hello World! Did you know that Google is much more than a simple search engine? In my role as a Google Certified Teacher, I have discovered hidden features in Google's technology services that I want to share with you in this blog,  "I Didn't Know Google Could Do That!" I will draw upon content from my past presentations at Google, Google Certified Teacher Reboots, and the ISTE conference. I will share search secrets, services, and entertaining Google features that can be used in schools and to enhance your personal life. My posts will include tips and tricks that can be used to spice up technology professional development presentations, as well as lesson ideas that incorporate multiple Google tools.
